The Blog Has a New Home!!

 As promised, the blog now has a new home address, this time with a newsletter subscription attached to it! I had goofed around with a couple sites, trying to find what worked.  Since I can't afford the paid subscriptions to keep a new website active, I went with Beehiiv, as they have a better plan for startup newsletter creators.

I had questions from some friends about any costs involved.  You're in luck: subscribing to the new site is free! All you're doing is just putting your email in so updates can go directly to you.  While this original blog had some variety, I have some more ideas planned to make it a true farming lifestyle blog.

  August 26 marks one year at the Somerset Farmhouse ! We've been going non-stop since settling into what was basically a blank slate of a house.  And a family full of ideas in a new home is bound to produce some incredible results, right? Well, here's a quick snapshot of how we've done:    They say a lot can happen in a year, and boy, did a lot happen this past year! We've renovated all but one room, started planting our own food , and have been raising a litter of kittens alongside our regular cats.   Our first week or so involved tearing up carpets, rugs, and old linoleum: Finding beautiful hardwood floors underneath was like digging up gold! Day after day, we sliced up carpet, took out the linoleum in pieces, and also had fun reading old newspapers as far back as the 1930s . One Year Later | Part 2: Starter Homestead

As promised, I am back with another One Year Later post! Last time, I gave you all a brief walkthrough of the renovations that the farmhouse had undergone.  Each room presented its own challenges: carpet, wallpaper, flooring repairs, cracked ceilings , etc.  Every wall needed some spackling and a fresh coat of paint.  But what else needed a fresh revival was the acreage outside ! Out back used to be a kitchen garden that had become overtaken by grass.  Upon our arrival, I thought that flat bit of land was interesting and quickly found out it was indeed used for gardening.  Well, perfect setup to do our own thing, right? That's exactly what we did this year! Homestead Prep

Happy spring, everyone!  Okay, where I am in PA, it feels like spring despite the average temperature still indicating it's winter.  I guess we're in that false spring transition, when it suddenly gets warmer and you have hope for a solid 4 minutes before it gets cold again.  And we're due for snow this weekend?  Actually, it's okay if we get more snow.  Living on this farm, I always hope for a good snowy winter as the ground needs good nourishment.  While the soil is great for growing produce out here, a decent amount of snow certainly enriches the ground.   Last year was a learning experience in growing and harvesting.  The one thing that did the best, besides the peas and onions, was the potato crop ! As I was digging them out, I had an epiphany: establish a potato farm !
