The Forever Project

The final touches!

I've been itching to update you all on the progress of my bedroom! What was initially supposed to be done within a few months turned into almost a full year.  The wait was largely due to other things conflicting with ability to get just the ceiling done - and the fact that putting beadboard up took 3 people to accomplish.  The product I had ordered is heavier than the beadboard in the bathroom.  Thus, we had to take some precautions and use our smarts to correctly install it.  So, my dad, sister, and I all tag-teamed.

Here's how that went...

Some struggles

One of the roadblocks we ran into was a general unevenness of the support beams.  With old houses like this, the measurements aren't always exact - so getting the screws to grab onto something proved a bit troublesome.  Eventually, my dad figured it out, but it took a bit of trial and error and a good deal of searching.

In order to smoothen out the process, Pop added a few boards to help slide the beadboard edges together

He also made wooden braces for me and my sister to hold up the sheets as he screwed them in

The last sheet needed trimming

At long last, and after some finagling, the final sheet was installed!

But we're not done yet...

More Handyman Labor

I like to step in and learn how to do handyman work.  And there seems to be an uptick in that trend of young women doing their own home renovations with little to no help - unless it's a big project that requires extra muscle.  Unlike the girls in the Facebook and Instagram Reels, I don't film any of what I do.  And that's mainly because of needing the right film equipment and the time to edit videos.

I guess it's just easier to snap pictures of everything, like the work I did on the ceiling...

Those little dark splotches are caulk over the screws and any other holes drilled in the beadboard.  After caulking them and letting it cure, I hustled to paint everything before heading into work

Slowly but surely, it came together

The seams were the toughest part to seal as 2 of the boards weren't quite even

Finally finished it!

The Creme de la Creme

If you're still with me, as this is a longer blog post, then sit tight! The final showpiece is here!

I had bought a ceiling fan several months ago in the anticipation of having the ceiling done earlier.  That day finally came this week!

Setting up the parts and figuring out the directions

Pop did the trickier part of the electrical work, as I'm unfamiliar with that stuff.  And yes, I did watch as he fiddled with the wires

Once the electrical part was finished, I was able to do the rest - I had already assembled the fan blades before putting the rest together.  Now, I couldn't get any pictures of me putting the fan together but let me say how much fun it was doing the work: plugging in wires, making sure the parts lined up, testing out the lighting and fan, etc.

Here's the final product!

Lights on!

Lights off!

A little bit of context for how it looks! Yeah, the fan was on for all these pics - it was so hot in my room!

Still more to do!

Now that the main renovations are done, I'm setting to work dressing up the room.  I've started by installing cat shelves - which will be in the next blog post - and have plans to install more shelving and update the decor.  It's got a ways to go but it's come a long way since we moved into this house.  I'm hoping to have more done before winter sets in because, let's be real, I just want to relax in this room! While I am that kind of person that enjoys productive work, tiredness eventually sets in and my body just screams for a break.

Any breaks I get will be short-lived as we still have the back room to clean out and redo.  Seems like that will be a cold-weather project while we're still working the land this summer.

Hope you enjoyed this little update, and I'll see you in the next post!

Support the Farm
If you love what I'm posting and want to help support the growing farm, you can give me a shoutout by "donating" a coffee! You have the freedom to decide the amount and how often you want to contribute.  All proceeds will go towards future farm equipment, animal care (like the cats and kittens!), fixing up the small house out front as it's slowly falling apart, and finishing up renovations on the farmhouse.  We buy what we can when we can, as renovating a house this large and investing in the homestead comes with a hefty price tag these days.
