Hard at Work

Working hard

We've been hustling away here at the Somerset Farmhouse! The place has been coming together like a puzzle - slow progress, but that's better than none at all.

Updating an old farmhouse can certainly keep one on their toes.  The nice part about it is, you can tailor it to your personal style.  What could be more rewarding? I don't have too much to share on my room as I'm still in the process of decorating and still have to get beadboard up on my ceiling - that in itself is a 3-person project.  Once it's picture-ready, then I can post some good photos to the blog here.

On that train of thought, we finally got my parents' room finished and are now tackling the guest room.

More Wallpaper!!

As with my room and basically every other space in the house, the walls and ceiling were completely lined with wallpaper.  Bear in mind, it's never just one layer - it's 3, maybe 4.  Old time home renovations were nothing like today.  If you didn't like a wallpaper, you just applied a new one.  And in this case, all those patterns were painted over.

We wasted no time applying the steamer and vinegar water to all these layers

Saying goodbye to the old color

I have to say though, these walls and ceiling were a treasure trove of old patterns.  Unfortunately, due to years of being covered, much of the original colors were faded.  You could only see a metallic glimmer of what once was something really nice to look at

Unlike my room, which still has wallpaper on the ceiling, this room was stripped straight down to the plaster.  And yes, it's been confirmed that these walls are horsehair plaster!

Ah yes, a blank canvas!

Some spackling because, you know, cracks

Fresh coat of coffee color paint

Painted the doors

And finally, the floor got a fresh treatment of polyacrylic.  The wood texture came out beautifully!

Nothing like homey, earthy colors!

Behold the final product!!

Okay, so it's not the final-final product, but it came a long way and looks perfect! The closet space is going to be modified in the near future.  What's funny about the closets in this house is that they are rather narrow but were built deep into the walls.  Imagine having a spacious bedroom but slim closets.  It's interesting, though it certainly needs some accommodation for modern life.

Sneak Preview

And speaking of accommodations, our guest room is underway and nearing completion!

My sister and I went full force into the floor in this room.  The original plan was to strip the wallpaper, but we don't have that kind of time or energy to play with.  We're focusing now on making it fully functional for family and other guests!

More photos on the next update!

See you later!
