Guest Room Progress

The thing about renovating a farmhouse is I love doing things to preserve the character.  But that goes for any old house really.  And in the guest room, we have been tag-teaming to bring to life a cozy farm style.  There are a lot of pictures, so this may be a multiple post update - not back-to-back since there's more to share, but certainly consistent!

Here's how that's going:

One of the first areas we tackled was the floor.  I've probably mentioned this in a previous blog post, but it's worth mentioning again: the wood is red oak! It's durable and has certainly withstood the test of time.  However, the floor was looking a bit worn from being covered with carpet and vinyl.  So, we went to town giving it a proper sanding.

Getting rid of the varnish took quite a bit.  You can see where vinyl had been at one point.

My sister did most of the sanding - days upon days of it! To speed up the process, I started going full force cleaning up the trims - and sanding whenever I could.

The result of hard work! The gray tones were finally gone, and I had managed to get these trims completely stripped of the old finish.

Sanding door frames though is a bit of a challenge - especially this one, which needed a boost

Before

and

after
Not entirely sure how this part of the trim ended up in that condition, but I got it all nice and clean!

How it was...

and

how it's going!
This was certainly part of my vision for it - a nice, barn red wall! The closet door is going to be a deep blue to give it more of a patriotic feel.

More to come!

Never a dull moment in this farmhouse with all the fixing we're doing! The whole place just pops with vibrant colors now! My plan for future blog posts is to eventually take you on little adventures outside of the house.  The farm itself dates back to the 1870s and we have found lots of relics hiding around the property.  Nothing beats rediscovering history!

I'll end this here as I have lots to do today!

Until next time!
