Farmhouse Decor (part 1)

End of the Hiatus

I'm back after a brief hiatus! The past couple weeks of November were turned upside down.  I came down with a nasty cold that finally cured after a week and a half.  And being that I'm still new at my job, there was no sick time available.  Working through sickness was tough, but I made it.  On top of that, there was a death in the family, so I had to travel a lot between NJ and PA - while still being under the weather.  Oy...

Now that things are a bit calmer - hopefully for a while - we've been focusing on decorating the house, aside from painting and fixing up the rooms.  Pictures are going up in addition to fall and winter decor.  It's an interesting mix, but it works!

Today's post will showcase the highlights of our farmhouse style!

Remember the kitchen?

The fresh new paint job, a lovely coffee color, provided the perfect canvas for us to add our personal touches.  My dad got the ball rolling with going through boxes and we all just followed suit.

The birdhouses and coffee cans from the old house went perfectly above the sink.  And since I'm obsessed with white lights, I just had to enhance the space

Our decor consists of antique items and other novelty decorations.  What better place than an old farmhouse to display these things?

One common theme in our house is ornate shelving.  There's just something about the design of these types of shelves that brings a sort of hominess into a house.  I guess it just feels organic.

I also found the perfect spot for the autumn angel, right above the window.  Not sure where I bought this beautiful lady - probably at my old craft store job.  We've had it so long, it's hard to remember.

I wanted to put lighting around this spot and the window, but some improvisation may be needed.

Let's go upstairs!

A nice orange hue warmed up the hallway, giving it a southwest sort of vibe.  Add lights and an old dresser and you get something like this:

This dresser serves as storage for towels and other items for future guests.  Handy, right?

Meanwhile, in the dining room...

Decorating isn't just for humans.  My orange Tabby, Cheddar Jack, decided he wanted in on the fun.  So, he offered his kitty self as a living decoration that comes and goes as it pleases:

The hutch is his new favorite spot.  Nine times out of ten, you'll find him chilling right there.

Self-proclaimed king of the hutch, judging everyone from his little perch

Last but not least...

The stairs in the foyer needed some special treatment.  Pop pulled out some of the little Christmas village - and since there is so much space to work with, these things added just the right touch on the first step:

So peaceful

There will be more!

We certainly aren't done emptying our numerous boxes of farmhouse-themed decor.  A lot has gone up on the walls and we are still finding more in our temporary storage room.  As we finish painting everything, I'll be able to share more wonderful pictures on this blog.

That's it for today! See you all in the next post!
