A Tale of Two Bedrooms
Kind of Overdue
Happy Sunday!!
This update is about a week overdue but better late than never! I'm going to kick off this post with one thing that just made me inexplicably happy: hanging up lights!
Armed with a ladder, a gripper, and whichever unlucky family member that crossed my path, I managed to string this set of lights along the bottom of the railing. And it just looks so homey!
Now, onto the main topic!
The '80s called...
Pulling up carpet is an adventure...
And you're about to see why...
Underlayment yet again sticking to the floor!
This wasn't just underlayment; it was the adhesive! Thankfully it all came up pretty easy with some scraping and my little rotating sander cut all of that and the varnish out.
I'd say about a good 3/4 of that wood floor was unfinished, with worn varnish around the edges. Yikes!
Armed with my little device, as I didn't have the belt sander handy, I tackled the floor - which turns out to be red oak!
I finally got it done after what felt like an eternity. The next step is to do a finer sanding job before applying a solid stain and then waxing. There's still a ton of dust in my room from sanding faux paint off the trims, doors, and windowsills - but that's a post for another day!
In other news...
My sister, however, has been facing quite the challenge in her room. The carpet she pulled up was from somewhere in the '70s and dark green that didn't really match the walls. Pulling that up made the room look bigger. But there was one thing we didn't anticipate...
Partially disintegrated underlayment!
Imagine ripping up old carpet and finding half of the underlayment turned to dust with the other half still intact. This was the start of the scraping job before she switched to bigger and better scrapers and two different sanders!
Here's the before...
Here's after:
She's been hard at work in this room, doing everything under the sun to get the remnants of the underlayment out of the floor. This stuff is incredibly stubborn, more so than the glue from my room. She has had to change sandpaper multiple times as the material just gets stuck in the grit. Progress is being made though, slowly but surely.
As we'll see here...
Goo Gone was the final resort to getting it out. Her face says it all!
Both bedrooms are a big work in progress right now. It will probably be another week or two before they're complete and we can move all our stuff in. For now, we're sharing a room that will eventually become the guest bedroom! Once we get past the hurdle of stripping floors and trims and whatnot, then we can team up to wash, spackle, and paint the walls. I won the race of the floors at least, but getting those yellow trims completely done has set me back a bit. Hey, I claimed the room, now it must be renovated to my liking!
Full steam ahead!
The fun part will be working all these renovations around my new work schedule. Thankfully, I have consistent shifts, affording me time to get things done around the house.
Just wait until I show the tearing of the carpet from the foyer and dining room. That...was a trip!
A trip back in time, that is...!
Until next time! Enjoy your week!
